We took the next couple hours before the second ceremony to have a nice tour of the private side of the house along the back stairwell that led up to the clock tower and to the roof. Our friendly tour guides pointed out the 400 year old Arabian cypress that had originally been potted trees in the old formal garden, the crawl space above the Double Cube room (the room that displays the priceless collection of Van Dycks), ‘Maiden’s Row’ a floor for just the ladies who were visiting, one of the prints signed by the queen, as a testimony to the visit that the Wilton House hosted (one of seven Royal visits). It was said that even one visit from the Royal family would actually bankrupt many noble families so this is a trophy! We also were shown a magnificent old porcelain bathtub in one of the Royal Suites where Prince William and Harry had stayed, along with a quaint but effective towel warmer, a view of the gardens from another direction with a pair of modern fountains that the late Earl had commissioned. Finally, there were the historic servant’s quarters that were along the narrow circular flight of stairs that led up to the clock tower with their own tiny fireplaces and modern outlets.
